Immunotherapy Treatment



treatments that harness and enhance the innate powers of the immune system to fight cancer—represents the most promising new cancer treatment approach since the development of the first chemotherapies in the 1940s. For more than 60 years, the Cancer Research Institute (CRI) has been the pioneer in advancing this new class of treatment. Immunotherapy may not cause the same side effects as chemotherapy and radiation and may vary depending on which type is used and offers the possibility for long-term cancer remission.



Surgery

This is a procedure where the surgeon removes cancer from the body. Depending on the type of cancer, this treatment may or may not be effective.



Radiation Therapy

This cancer treatment used high doses of radiation to kill cancer cells and shrink tumors. It is mostly used to treat very localized cancers contained into one area of the body. Cells are damaged or destroyed with radiation so they cannot grow.



Chemotherapy

This is a type of cancer treatment that uses strong drugs to kill cancer cells. Chemotherapy is typically given by injection or by mouth and in many cases more than one chemo drug is used. Chemo drugs can treat cancers which have spread all through the body because it travels via the bloodstream, unlike radiation treatment that is more focussed on one area.



Hormone Therapy

The use of hormone therapy treatment helps to slow or stop the growth of prostate and breast cancers which use hormones to grow.



Stem Cell Transplant

A stem cell transplant or sometimes called a bone marrow transplant is used to restore blood-forming stem cells in cancer patients who have had their own stem cells destroyed by high doses of radiation or chemotherapy.



Precision or Personalized Targeted Medicine

These are types of treatment which target the specific genes and/or proteins of the specific cancer that contributes to the cancers survival and growth.



Alternative Treatments

These are treatment used instead of standard medical treatments. They typically have less proof that they work given that they usually don’t have clinical trials done.
